Every Christmas celebrations first start with hanging a star in front of the houses. The star is the first sign that depicts the arrival Christmas’s festive season. The Christmas star has traditionally been associated with the spirit of the celebration and there is something very special about it. At the same time, scholars, astronomers and laymen have speculated on the nature of the star that led the wise men from the east to seek out the Messiah. There have been speculations and mysteries running behind the presence of the Christmas star.
One story that depicts the role of the star is that it was the one which showed the route for the shepherds to the place where and when Jesus Christ was born. The story goes like, there was a day when a star, very bright, making the hills night look as day. Along with it came an angel which said that the star has come to bring good, tidings of great joy, and to show the place where a little baby is born, whose name is Jesus, and who will give peace and joy to the whole world. So, the shepherds followed the star that led them to the birth place of Jesus Christ.
On the other hand, the astronomers are trying to discover whether such a star could exist at the time of Christ birth. (2000 years ago). Astronomers rule out the possibility of a Meteor, because the Christmas star has been guiding the route for few days (Meteor lasts for only few secs). There could be a possibility for a bright star to appear at the time when the planets Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were close together in the heavens. They formed a triangle in the group of stars known as Pisces. But the doubt remains whether this period coincides with the birth of the Christ (no evidence to prove)

Christmas is one of the most festival times of the year which is enjoyed by everyone. It is enjoyed by everyone because of the reason that it gives an opportunity to family to reconnect and the Christmas tree is a symbol of the bond that all shares because we always put it together and decorate it as a family. A Christmas without the Christmas tree is illogical. There can be no Christmas celebrations without the essence and fragrance of Xmas trees. They are the central part of the celebrations as all the customs happens in front of the trees and the gifts are suffixed with them.
These trees act as the symbolic representation of Christmas in various European countries because they stayed green and alive when other plants appeared dead and bare. They represented everlasting life and hope for the return of spring. It is said that the evolution of Christmas trees first happened in Germany during the first half of 700s, from where happened many changes and has now been regarded as the symbol of Christmas in all parts of the world. Few also feel the origin of the Christmas tree may be the “Paradise Play”.
Some say that the first used Xmas trees were fir trees and before that it was hemlocks (It’s still a myth!). But today there are approximately 50 different kinds of conifers sold to woo shoppers. So here is a small tip for you in picking a fresh Xmas tree;
‘Gently grasp a branch and pull your fingers toward you. Very few needles should come off if the tree is fresh. Then, discretely pick off a few needles and bend them between your fingers. If the tree is fresh, the needles should break or crisply snap – just like a fresh carrot’.

Though Christmas has been celebrated as the festival of lights, gifts and joy, there is also the essence of religious aspects attached to it which goes unrecognized. Therefore knowing the religious aspect of Christmas is equally important. Since there is no set of rules or procedures prescribed on how to celebrate Christmas, there are lots of customs around that differs from country to country. Traditionally, the sacred Christmas season starts with Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continues to Christmas Day. The sacred season ends on Epiphany, January 6.
The Advent; is the time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before December 25, each of the four weeks symbolizes a different way in which believers perceive Christ: through the flesh, the Holy Spirit, death, and Christ’s judgment of the dead. At the beginning of each of the four weeks preceding Christmas, Christians light an Advent wreath (consists of four candles anchored in a circle of evergreen branches, originated with German Lutherans) as they say a prayer.
On Christmas Eve, churches around the world hold special candlelight services. The celebration of midnight mass is based on the ancient belief that Jesus was born precisely on the stroke of twelve. Solemn and impressive with the happy sound of bells, with candle light sparkling everywhere and with hymns of joy are some of the inevitable aspects of Midnight Mass.
Next comes the Christmas day ceremony which has incorporated some leftovers of ancient rituals such as the custom of burning Yule logs; the Yule log symbolizes the victory of light over the darkness of winter. The tradition of lighting the Yule log is still observed, especially by Europeans. Families light the log on Christmas Eve and keep it burning until Epiphany.

The Tradition of Christmas festival has gradually evolved from times that long represented the Christian period. Though Christmas is regarded as festivals of traditions and events, many of the younger generations doesn’t know the origins of Christmas. Traditions are often passed down throughout generations for centuries, but the origins are often unknown or forgotten. So just to be aware of few origins of Christmas traditions just continue reading.
Christmas cannot be celebrated without enjoying the arrival of Santa Claus with presents. History says that Santa Claus was really known as St. Nicholas; he did not smoke a pipe, fly around in a sleigh with any reindeer, go down chimneys, work with elves, or live at the North Pole. But he was known for his generosity and kindness towards poor and unhappy. He gave gifts to kids every year. It was Clement Moore in 1822 through his poem gave birth to the modern day Santa. In this poem you will find that he names the reindeer, invents the sleigh, and comes up with the chimney and the bag of toys.
Christmas Trees are the recognizable symbol during Christmas season. Actually, the tradition of the Christmas tree comes from Germany. The very first trees were oak, the same tree used for the Yule Log. Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, decorated the first English Christmas Tree with candles, candies, fruits, and gingerbread. When the German immigrants went to America they also brought along their Christmas trees. Many still considered the tree to be a symbol of pagans and it wasn’t until the late 1800′s that Americans began accepting the Christmas trees.
The invention of Rudolph was an advertising gimmick. The red-nosed reindeer was born in 1939 when a 34-year old writer for Montgomery Ward named Robert L. May was asked to invent a Christmas story.

Can you imagine modernization without corruption? Can there be smoke without fire? Is there a possible to have Santa without reindeer, likewise there cannot be Christmas celebrations without Christmas candies. They are the inseparables and they go hand in hand like jingles and bells. Will there be anyone who doesn’t like a Christmas candy? Thus a candy completes the Christmas celebrations. Therefore, candies especially homemade are very vital as apart from just eating, they are also used to give as gifts.
Mostly candies bring every family member together while making them. It is an important family activity done during Christmas holidays as the homemade candies last for long days and the recipe can be adjusted according to the individual tastes.
It is said that the history of these candies go back to 1670, when the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany, bent the sugar-sticks into canes to represent a shepherd’s staff (it was only in full white color). Around 1900, the candies underwent a makeover and thus we had the stripped candy with added peppermint and wintergreen flavors.
There are various types of Christmas candy that can be prepared at home. Here is an easy recipe for you!
Combine the sugar (3c), water (1/2c), syrup (3/4 c), and cream of tartar (1/4ts) and heat till the sugar is dissolved real fine. Divide into two saucepans, boil, (until each 280F). Add 1/2 ts peppermint to each lot and add the red coloring (3/4ts) to one, the other not: place on an enamel or marble table to cool. Like taffy you stretch and pull and form into ropes of red and white, now twist them around again and again. And form them into your candy cane. Now on an oiled surface you allow them to harden.
